History

In 1956, four visionary couples led and inspired by James and Golda Cole established the first congregation of the Church of God (Anderson, IN) in Limestone County. Meeting initially at a tent meeting on Green Street, the fledgling congregation faced opposition from some in the community. Nevertheless, the congregation was established and 50 years later is still a beacon for unity and holiness in Athens, AL.
The first permanent building was located on Highway 72. In 1994, under the leadership of Pastor Aubrey W. (Bill) Reynolds, the congregation relocated to its current location.
Athens Church of God is part of a larger movement of the Church of God, with general offices in Anderson, IN. This movement had its roots in the holiness revival of the 1800’s. Joining the doctrine of holiness with the conviction that all Christians should not be divided created a body of Believers unique within Christianity. The Church of God ministers took as their motto, “We reach our hands in fellowship with every blood-washed one, while love entwines about each heart in which God’s will is done.” With passion they sang:
Christians all should dwell together in the bonds of peace All the clashing of opinions, all the strife should cease Let divisions be forsaken, all the holy join in one And the will of God in all be done.
Athens Church of God remains committed to bringing about unity among Christians. Taking advantage of every opportunity, through joint services and projects, Athens Church of God seeks to work alongside all Christian groups in the effort to see the will of God accomplished in our community.

The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it. — Ronald Reagan
